What is an Enterprise Cell?

We at Bonanza and Kenyamart.com have come up with a service on our website that will attract youth and inspire them into becoming creative and enterprising. Peer to Peer collaboration service aims at challenge the youth towards innovation, working jointly and helping others. It provides platform where youth can come forward with their ideas and turn them into successful commercial organizations through partnering with others in the community. Through contributions the peer to peer collaboration is a link that opens a discussion forum. It requires a sponsor who births the main idea. Then others join in under the concept of pulling other people up. They form an enterprise cell which started off as an idea that grows into a group that turns that idea into an enterprise.

The enterprise cell will start with an idea, grows into a group that turns that idea into an enterprise. The following are important stages from identifying an idea and following through until it becomes an operational enterprise.

A Person with an Idea

All living life forms start with the formation of an egg. The growth from an egg to the adult is a fitting comparison to the life of an enterprise cell. The enterprise starts its life when a person forms an idea on what could be done to provide a product or service to society. The person starts sometimes with a vague idea. He thinks about it. Gradually the idea becomes clearer. He sees opportunities and figures out how to take advantage of them. He sees problems and thinks of how to overcome them. At some stage he feels that he has a clear idea on how an enterprise cell can be started on his idea. At this stage he feels confident to share his idea with someone else sometimes the person may not have all the solutions but will feel confident that by starting the idea with other people they will jointly come up with solutions. When he feels confident to discuss his idea with someone else, the egg is fully grown and is ready to be laid.

Discussing the Idea with Other People

The visionary shares the idea on peer to peer collaboration service and invites the interest of two or three people and sometimes more. These people form the core group for the enterprise cell. The core group forms the founding committee and they start looking at the market for the products and services offered by the potential enterprise as well as how it will run. The group should only expand to about ten or twelve people to keep it effective. Then gradually it should whittle down after say two to three months of familiarization to five members based on what they can contribute.

The group should appoint a chairman who will be the champion and also have a senior business partner. The others should have a special area. One of them should be somebody with social skills, a visionary and a marketing manager for the project. The group will decide on the project cost and the unit cost per share and also be responsible on deciding how far they should reach in recruiting other members. They should recruit other people who can work directly with the committee. For the purpose of youth empowerment, the peer to peer collaboration will have a national reach and enterprise cells should have this in mind when working. Therefore the committees should approach any know senior business partners in their area to enhance the capabilities of the group. The committee should also approach organizations that will help the group tap any government resources at the local level. The committee should also approach any NGO operation their area to see whatever assistance the NGO can give either in material or financial form or in organizational arrangements. It should also approach senior business partners, commercial organizations and consultants.

The committee will collect as much information as necessary for the enterprise and does detailed feasibility study as well as sourcing of inputs, equipment and pricing with the assistance of mentors. In addition to collection of data the committee can look for the necessary things to establish the enterprise. They can look for the land or premises as necessary. They can initiate negotiations towards acquisition of such things. The committee should do whatever is in their power and ability to do. The committee must take the whole burden of recruiting members in general people who want to contribute towards the enterprise and device ways to enable the people to spare as much as they can as the benefits of the enterprise will accrue both to the community and individuals. It will sometimes be necessary for the committee to device new income generating activities so that members of the community can generate income to contribute for the enterprise. The committee will be required to be very creative in this and all other matters necessary to promote the enterprise. They can start a community network scheme to raise money for the enterprise. The scheme is started by the chairman of the steering committee contributing a little sum affordable by most members of the community. He then goes out and recruits three people to contribute the same. By contributing the three members undertake to recruit three other members each. The chain gradually spreads until it covers every member of the community. Under the scheme every member’s contribution goes towards their share in the enterprise. There can be various variants to the scheme. The consultants will collect and refine all the constituent prices. The committee will device many other ways of recruiting members and raising money. The recruitment will coordinate the various parties and put the prices together.
